Why Fran Belibi told college basketball coaches: Don’t call us, we’ll call you

Regis Jesuit forward Francesca Belibi (1) calls out to one of her players during the second half of the 5A girls state championship basketball game at the Denver Coliseum on March 10, 2018 in Denver. The Grandview Wolves beat the Regis Jesuit Raiders 67-61.

The Stanford commitment and Regis Jesuit star set up a web site as a portal for potential suitors.
Coaches might not have loved it, but they eventually played ball.

Where they saw method, Fran Belibi saw madness, and vice versa. The Regis Jesuit girls basketball star and Stanford commit remembers seeing a friend being recruited to collegiate lacrosse programs. But she also noticed how many texts and calls said friend, the minute the recruiting window opened, was getting in the middle of the school day.

“I don’t pick up a phone,” Belibi told The Post, “if it’s not a number that I know.”

For the school-first Belibis, those kind of intrusions weren’t going to fly. So the family took two steps regarding her recruitment: First, they changed Fran’s cell number. Then they set up a web site –www.franbelibirecruit.com — as an entry point for coaches interested in recruiting the Raiders forward, who in less than two years went from never having played basketball competitively before high school to one of the nation’s most sought-after recruits.

The message: Don’t call us. We’ll call you.
